Power and punishment in Michel Foucault’s lectures at the Collège de France (1971-1975)
The project analyzes, within the context of social theory, the courses taught by philosopher and historian Michel Foucault at the Collège de France prior to the publication of his book Discipline and Punish (1975). We seek to further explore how Foucault researched the emergence of modern punishment and imprisonment as well as his notion of “disciplinary power.” These discourses are central for understanding modern and contemporary forms of power, domination, and legitimacy.
