Call for proposals: postdoctoral fellowship until September 30

The Center for the Study of Violence of the University of São Paulo (NEV/USP) announces the following selection process held by the Department of Applied Mathematics at USP São Carlos for individuals with a Ph.D. in computer science, applied mathematics, or related fields, with proven high-quality publications, programming skills, and a solid background in data science and machine learning.

Applications will be accepted by that Department until September 30, 2023. They will be received by email, as instructed in the official link of the opportunity, and must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae (with publication record) and two letters of recommendation following the Call for Proposal’s description.

 

The fellowship’s activities will be developed within the scope of the Thematic Project “Criminality, Insecurity, and Legitimacy: A Transdisciplinary Approach,” which offers a postdoctoral position for those interested in collaborating at the interface between social sciences and data science. This project, funded by FAPESP, aims to advance cutting-edge research in criminal data analysis, being a collaboration between the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the University of São Paulo – ICMC-USP, the Center for the Study of Violence – NEV (a Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Center – RIDC of FAPESP based at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences – FFLCH-USP), São Paulo State University – Unesp, and the Federal University of Alagoas – UFAL. The postdoctoral fellowship will be based at ICMC-USP in São Carlos.

“Postdoc Position in the Thematic Project: Criminality, Insecurity, and Legitimacy: a transdisciplinary approach

 The thematic project Criminality, Insecurity, and Legitimacy: a transdisciplinary approach opens a post-doctoral research position for researchers interested in collaborating in the interface between social sciences and data science, investigating problems related to criminality, impunity, and legitimacy of the justice system institutions.

The project, funded by Fapesp (Sao Paulo State Research Funding Agency), aims at advancing state-of-the-art research in crime data analysis, being a collaboration between the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences – ICMC/USP, the Center for the Study of Violence – NEV/USP, Unesp, and UFAL, Brazil.  The post-doc will interact with members of those institutions but s/he will be hosted in São Carlos/SP, Brazil.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow! Curiosity, open mind, creativity, persistence, and collaborative work capability are the key personal skills we target. A Ph.D. in computer science, applied mathematics, or related fields is required, with demonstrated experience and high-quality publications. Candidates should have advanced programming skills and a solid background in data science and machine learning techniques. Candidates must have obtained their PhD in the last 7 years.

Portuguese speaking is not required, but fluency in English is mandatory.

São Paulo Research Foundation provides financial support with a monthly salary of R$ 9,047.40 (about U$ 1,870.00). Financial support can also be provided to cover transportation expenses to move to São Carlos – Brazil. An extra grant to cover participation in highly relevant conferences, research trips (limited to 15% of the annual amount of the fellowship), computers, and research-related equipment is also provided. The position is initially for one year, but it can be extended to an extra year.
